Hospital Services

The Highland Animal Hospital offers a comprehensive list of services to promote the health of your pet. If you would like additional information about any of the services we offer, contact us at (781) 433-0467, and our staff will be happy to assist you.

Wellness care

As your pet matures from juvenile to adult to senior, we offer comprehensive wellness plans designed to address the particular health needs of each life stage. Because our pets age much faster than humans, our wellness program begins with twice a year physical examinations. We will make recommendations for your pet regarding his or her vaccinations, nutrition, dental care, heartworm prevention (both dogs and cats), parasite control, appropriate laboratory testing and behavioral counseling. Our health care team works with you to ensure that your pet enjoys a long, happy and healthy life.

Dental care

Did you know that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some degree of dental disease by the age of three? Our focus is on preventative dental care. We aim to detect dental problems before they become too severe to be corrected thus requiring surgical extraction. After completing your pet’s oral examination the veterinary team will make specific recommendations regarding proper dental care to optimize your pet’s oral health and comfort.

Diagnostics

When your pet is ill, a thorough physical examination is only a piece of the puzzle to help us determine what is wrong. Highland Animal Hospital has a full in-house diagnostic laboratory capable of providing immediate blood work results as well as a state-of-the-art veterinary x-ray machine with digital imaging. When more sophisticated testing is required, we utilize a certified veterinary laboratory offering the expertise of board certified specialists in pathology, hematology, internal medicine and radiology. For your convenience we can also schedule in-house echocardiograms, endoscopy and colonoscopy performed by board certified veterinary cardiology and internal medicine specialists.

Surgery

No procedure is routine when it comes to surgery. Our doctors and nurses provide an individualized anesthetic and pain management plan for each pet undergoing surgery. For your pet’s safety, our operating suite is equipped with the latest in veterinary monitoring systems including EKG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, temperature, heart rate and respiration rate. Our nurses monitor and record vital signs from the moment your pet is anesthetized until he/she is safely in recovery. The doctors at Highland Animal Hospital are experienced in a wide variety of soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries. In the event that a surgical procedure requires techniques beyond our expertise we utilize a board certified surgeon who will perform both orthopedic and soft tissue surgery right at our hospital.

Travel certification

Requirements for pets traveling within and outside the U.S. have become more stringent often requiring a health certificate and a current rabies vaccination at a minimum. Many countries also require microchip identification and the completion of a health certificate by a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)–accredited veterinarian. Still others require blood testing for rabies antibodies several months in advance. If you plan travel with your pet, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can help you with the proper planning.

Referrals

We are fortunate to have many veterinary specialists available to us in the Boston metropolitan area. If a second opinion is beneficial for your pet we will gladly recommend a specialist at one of the surrounding referral hospitals.
